H.E. Raul S. Hernandez, Philippine Ambassador to Turkey, led the country’s participation to the 6th Istanbul Mediation Conference organized by Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Turkey on 31 October 2019 with the theme “International Peace Mediation: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead.”
Other participants from the Philippines included Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform Minister Mohammad Shuaib Yacob, Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer from the UN Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisers, and the Embassy’s Minister Enrique Voltaire Pingol.
The event brought together close to 400 policy-makers, diplomats, international organizations and NGOs in Istanbul with the participation of Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and the members of the UN Secretary General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation (HLAB).
Sessions discussed the various main aspects of the practice of mediation: the role of regional and international organizations in the field of mediation, strengthening cooperation, various main aspects of the practice of mediation, and the impact of emerging technologies on peace efforts. References were also made to the Philippines’ success and progress in the peace process in Muslim Mindanao.
