16 December 2019 - Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education Prospero de Vera III and chancellors of three fisheries universities in the Philippines, namely: University of the Philippines-Visayas; Iloilo State College of Fisheries; and the Mindanao State University- Naawan Campus, accompanied by Philippine Embassy officials, met with Prof. Dr. Yekta Saraç, President of the Council of Higher Education of Turkey (YÖK) and visited three of the largest universities in Ankara to explore possible areas of cooperation to line with the Protocol for Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education which was signed in the Manila on 21 November 2018.

The CHED delegation met with the Rectors of Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara University; and (3) Hacettepe University (over a welcome dinner) and visited their campuses, including METU's technopark hub, Technokent.

Chairman de Vera identified the following prospective areas of cooperation, namely: fisheries and agriculture, engineering, earth sciences, and technology. Great potential was seen in talks with Ankara University, which specializes in agriculture and fisheries. The universities also considered METU's advances in sciences and engineering and the way it ran its technopark which supports various industries, including the defense sector.

CHED and Turkey's Council of Higher Education (YOK) agreed to enhance relations by increasing number of faculty and student exchanges and developing joint graduate degrees/programs, especially in the fields of fisheries and agriculture. END
