IZMIR, 09 June 2022 – The Philippine Embassy in Ankara held a two-day culinary activity for the students of the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Izmir Economic University (IEU), on 07–08 June 2022, at the practice kitchen of the Department.

On the first day, three Embassy staff demonstrated to Chef Tolga Kamiloğlu and his culinary students the preparation of ensaladang talong (grilled eggplant salad, with tomatoes and onions) as an appetizer, homecooked style adobong manok (chicken stew in vinegar and soy sauce) as an entrée and ube (purple yam) ice cream for dessert.

The Embassy’s volunteer “chefs” were Attachés Ms. Sheila Solas, Mr. Clark Joseph Galang, and Ms. Maria Joana Paula A. Gonzales. They shared their recipes using ingredients that are available in Turkish supermarkets or Asian stores in Turkey.

After the cooking demonstration, the three dishes were served to thirty guests, led Dr. Prof. Murat Aşkar, Rector of the University; Dr. Prof. Betul Ozturk, Chairperson of the Department of Gastronomy; Heads of the Department of Engineering, Arts and Sciences and Fine Arts; and Associate Professors. Arabica coffee from Cordillera region in the Philippines was also served after the meal.
The following day, on 08 June 2022, the culinary students, under the guidance of Chef Kamiloğlu, tried preparing the Filipino dishes, such as arroz caldo, puto cheese, pandesal, kare kare, chicken adobo, and pininyahang manok.

In the afternoon, the Embassy team facilitated the online lecture on Philippine coffee by Associate Professor Valentino L. Macanes of the Department of Agriculture at the Benguet State University.
The two-day culinary activity at Izmir Economic University is part of the Embassy’s series of activities to promote Philippine cuisine in Türkiye and the month-long celebration of the 124th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence on 12 June 2022. ##
